Physical therapy treatment modalities are used to help penetrate tissue, reduce pain, facilitate healing, and restore performance. The Multidisciplinary Therapeutic Team at Spine and Sports Medicine use a variety of cutting-edge modalities in addition to an active exercise-based treatment program.
Physical Therapy Modalities
Cutting-edge physical therapy modalities are available at Spine and Sports Medicine. Here are their applications and projected results.
Ultrasound is a hand-held transducer producing sound waves applied in a circular motion on the painful area.
- Fracture healing
- Thrombus dissolution
- Treatment of plantar fasciitis
- Treatment of epicondylitis
Ultrasound waves heat tendons, muscles and other tissues to improve blood flow and accelerate the healing process.
Phonophoresis uses ultrasound to enhance the absorption of topical anti-inflammatory medications. The medication is combined with topical gel over the painful area and ultrasound waves dilate blood vessels to move the drug into the bloodstream.
Electrical Stimulation (E-stim) is used for modalities involving the attachment of electrodes to the skin over the painful area. E-stim is used for pain relief and functional improvements, including facilitating facial movements in patients suffering from Bell’s palsy.
Iontophoresis is similar to phonophoresis as a type of E-stim used to enhance topical medications. Electrical currents push topical anti-inflammatory drugs through the skin layer and into the bloodstream.
- Reduces inflammation
- Prevents muscle spasms
- Breaks up mineral deposits
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a modality used to temper acute and chronic pain – similar to E-stim. Frequencies activate pain receptors by sending non-painful stimuli through injured tissues and into the nervous system.
Light Therapy applies various sources of light to injured tissues by exerting the effects light has on chromophores. Chromophores are light-absorbing molecules using light energy to produce the cellular energy needed to synthesize materials needed for the injury repair process (DNA, RNA).
- Treatment of back pain
- Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome
- Wound healing
