Many conditions can cause your neck and shoulder pain, especially soft tissue injury to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments supporting your neck’s structure.

Common Causes of Neck Pain

  • Whiplash
  • Degenerative arthritis of the spine
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated disc
  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome – frozen shoulder

Whiplash is an injury to the ligaments and muscular structures of the neck and shoulder. This injury is commonly caused by sudden acceleration and deceleration – such as a rear-end car collision. Whiplash is a common cause of muscle spasms in the neck and shoulder areas.

Degenerative arthritis of the spine can pinch nerves that cause both neck and shoulder pain.

Degenerative disc disease in the neck – cervical spondylosis – can cause local neck pain and radiating pain from disc herniation, causing pinching of nerves – cervical radiculopathy.

Herniated disc is one that has ruptured after being injured – bulging – and left untreated.

Rotator cuff injury occurs within a group of tendons supporting the shoulder. These tendons are injured during heavy lifting and repetitive throwing motions.

Shoulder impingement syndrome is pain with any motion to the shoulder eventually leading to loss of range of motion – frozen shoulder.
