Lumbar fusion is a back surgical procedure in which a bone graft is placed in the spine for the purpose of allowing two parts of the vertebrae to gradually grow together into one longer bone. This longer bone serves to immobilize the spine at the segment of bone graft. Screws, cages, plates, and rods may be placed during the surgery to stabilize the area while the vertebrae heals and becomes solid.

Healing Timeline for Back Surgery

Invasive back surgery takes approximately three months to heal and the patient also wears a stabilizing brace to limit motion during this prolonged period. The vertebrae continues to mature and solidify over a prolonged period – 12 to 18 months – after back surgery. This is because such an invasive and major surgery calls for time to reinforce the fusion’s success. In cases where a patient’s nerves have been seriously injured, recovery may take from one to two years.

Physical Therapy

Regardless of the quality of back surgery care, neglecting to obtain a proper diagnosis of the medical cause of a patient’s chronic back pain will lead to an ineffective outcome and prolonged healing timeline. An improper diagnosis can also worsen the underlying cause of chronic back pain after surgery.

Quality physical therapy at Spine and Sports Medicine will relieve chronic back pain through a vast array of highly specialized high-tech/high-touch exercises. A consistent and guided regimen of these therapeutic exercises will result in a lifetime’s worth of back pain relief.
