Trigger point injections are a treatment modality for inactivating focal areas of pain. A palpable nodule in the muscle where the trigger point is located is often found. The focal area and nodule are tender when pushed and pain radiates from the trigger point to surrounding areas.

  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Tension Headache

Trigger Points

Trigger points are focal areas of muscle spasm and inflammation in skeletal muscle. A trigger point injection is the administration of medication directly into the area of muscle spasm where the palpable nodule in the muscle is located. The most common area of muscle spasm trigger points are located in the upper back and should areas – the rhomboid and trapezius back muscles. Trigger points can also occur in the low back and in extremities.

Trigger Point Disorders

Repetitive minor injuries or acute trauma can cause the development of trigger points. Chronic musculoskeletal disorders frequently accompany trigger points.

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome
  • Tension Headache
  • Temporomandibular Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Low Back Pain

Trigger Point Injections

A Trigger Point Injection (TPI) is used to administer medications directly into the focal area causing your pain.

  • Iidocaine (Xylocaine)
  • Bupivicaine (Marcaine)
  • A mixture of anesthetics
  • Corticosteroid (cortisone medication) alone or in combination with Iidocaine

Your TPI will be performed in the warm and comfortable patient rooms at Spine and Sports Medicine.

  • A TPI expert will locate the trigger point through manual palpation and mark the injection site
  • Rubbing alcohol is applied to disinfect the site
  • A numbing spray – ethyl chloride – is applied to anesthetize the skin and reduce the discomfort of the injection
  • The TPI medication is carefully injected into the trigger point
  • Ice or heat may be applied after the TPI to reduce discomfort later
  • Patients may also take Tylenol or Advil to alleviate injection site soreness
