Epidural Injections For Back Pain

Epidural injections treat radicular pain . Radicular means the irritated nerve root or weakness causing a nerve root to be affected. Radicular pain travels from the spine through an irritated nerve root.

  • Lumbar radiculopathy – Pain that commonly travels down the leg as a result of the irritation of a spinal nerve in the lower back
  • Cervical radiculopathy – Pain that travels down the arm is known as cervical radiculopathy
  • Neck and low back nerve compressions are also treated with epidural injections.

Epidural Injections for Back Pain

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Herniated discs
  • Spondylysis
  • Sciatica
  • Radiculitis
  • Radiculopathy

According to Dr. Brian Kessler – medical director of Spine and Sports Medicine – medical studies have proven the effectiveness of epidural steroid injections in reducing bilateral radicular pain. A Florida Spine Institute 2007 study confirmed that epidural injections improve standing and walking ability of patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis.

Epidural Injection Procedure

Epidural injections combine a corticosteroid with a local anesthetic pain reliever. The injection is administered into the area around the affected spinal cord and nerve roots – the epidural space.

  • Corticosteroids are strong medications that reduce inflammation
  • Anti-inflammatory medications relieve swelling and take pressure off nerves and other soft tissues – relieving pain
  • The local anesthetic medication also provides immediate pain relief
  • The combination of medication fans out to other areas of the spine, reducing inflammation and irritation

The ESI procedure usually takes approximately 15 minutes and the patient is able to resume their normal activities the day after the procedure.
