Do not despair about finding treatments for your herniated disc. Not every herniated disc needs surgical treatment. Typically, effective treatment includes physical therapy, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, and topical therapeutic techniques. A herniated disc occurs when a spinal disc slips out of place – bursts the alignment of the vertebrae is disrupted and pressure is placed against the spine’s nerves.

A Herniated Disc

A herniated disc can result from either:

  • Sudden injury or trauma, or
  • Spinal degeneration gradually over time

Nerve impingement causes great pain and stress along the spine and – depending on the location of the herniated disc – can radiate to other areas.

  • Cervical Spine – Pain radiates from the neck through the shoulders and arms
  • Lumbar Spine – Pain radiates from the lower back to the buttocks and down the legs

Other symptoms include numbness, tingling, and weakness in appendages.

  • Disc injuries cause a vast array of pain throughout the body and worsen through bending, twisting, and reaching movements
  • A herniated disc in the neck area of your spine may be causing pain to radiate from your neck through your shoulder and arm
  • A herniated disc in your mid-to lower back may be causing pain to radiate into the buttocks and leg
  • Discomfort may also be experienced through tingling, numbness, and weakness
