Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is an inherited disorder of progressive muscular weakness. Most males with muscular dystrophy have Duchenne syndrome, however, females can be carriers and mildly affect.

Muscular Dystrophy (MD) – a group of genetic diseases causing progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass – is the result of abnormal genes (mutations) leading to muscle degeneration. MD is a group of inherited diseases in which the muscles controlling movement progressively worsen. These muscles are voluntary muscles. Most forms of muscular dystrophies begin to form in childhood. Damaged muscles become progressively weak, eventually leading to the need for a wheelchair.

Symptoms of Duchenne Syndrome

  • Frequent falls
  • Trouble standing
  • Difficulty walking
  • Difficulty running
  • Waddling gait
  • Big calves
  • Learning disabilities

Those suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy may also experience the following symptoms:

  • A curved spine – scoliosis
  • Shortened, tight muscles in the legs – contractures
  • Headaches
  • Problems with learning and memory
  • Shortness of breath
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Sleepiness
  • Trouble concentrating

Males with this disease lack the crucial protein found in skeletal muscle – dystrophin. This lack of protein leaves muscles cells ill-equipped to retain their shape and strength. When this happens, muscles begin to degenerate, and the lack of dystrophin protein eventually weakens muscles. Eventually, affected muscles are those helping to control breathing and the beating of the heart.
